This just in: Spring IDE 2.0 final has been released.

Samen met Eclipse 3.3 geeft Spring IDE 2.0 je de ideale ontwikkelomgeving voor een Spring gebaseerde applicatie. Goeie zaak zeg ik dan!

In his last keynote Steve Jobs (no, I’m not a groupie) used more than 60 slides, but then again, you do have to look at the content of his slides (almost empty usually, no text and lots of graphics).

There is this rule that says 10 slides, 20 minutes, 30-punt fonts. I would think you’d probably have to bend this rule a little, but certainly not break is. The essence is good. Guy Kawasaki (an interesting blog to keep track of by the way) talks about approaching private equity companies for investments and that a whole different ball game than giving a conference presentation.

As of late, I try to kind of create slides that go beyond bullet points and if I may say so myself, that’s going pretty well actually. People’s reactions are good. Some examples of conference slide I use can be found in this post. Of course, this does not work for courseware and slides presented during longer events. People usually like to take slides with them to have a reference. This is a lot different from how things go at a conference of course. If you want to an audience to pay attention to your story and nothing else, make sure there’s little text in your slides. Also make sure that there’s something interesting to look at instead of just you. Graphics usually work and I even use almost-off-topic graphics (like the golf ball and hole you can see here) that only have a marginal link to the thing you are discussing.

Van de week m’n eerste uurtjes met een goede Eclipse 3.3 installatie gewerkt. Eindelijk komt het een klein beetje in de buurt van IntelliJ IDEA. Het is grappig en ironisch dat ik voor het eerst deze week training aan het geven ben aan een groep die normaalgesproken allemaal IntelliJ IDEA gebruiken, terwijl onze trainingen in principe van Eclipse uitgaan. Ach, what’s the difference anyway.

In ieder geval, over 30 uur (vanaf donderdag morgen 10 uur), dan komt Eclipse Europa uit en met alle plugins die standaard bij Europa meekomen (zie onder) wordt het ontwikkelen van enterprise Java applicaties weer een stuk makkelijk.

De belangrijkste voor mij zijn toch wel het Web Tools Platform en Mylyn. De eerste zorgt voor een goede aansluiting bij webomgevingen, de tweede zorgt voor een revolutionaire taak-gebaseerde omgeving.

Voor degene die het nog niet wisten. Wij (van Interface21) hebben een partnership gesloten met de makers van Mylyn (Tasktop) om samen te werken op tooling gebied. Interessant gedoe allemaal!

Anyway, Eclipse WTP zorgt voor erg goede Tomcat integratie heb ik net gemerkt (dat werd ver********* ook wel tijd ook). Eindelijk kun je gemakkelijk webappjes publiceren naar Tomcat.

Somebody told me a while ago that it doesn’t rain very often in Finland. The amount of rainfall per year he said, was about the same as in the Netherlands, but the advantage you get in Finland is that 80% of that rainfall is snow!. Snow is good, but well, in June you won’t see a lot of that here in Finland, as it’s warmer (at least, that’s what you’d expect) and it’s light out for 20 hours a day.

I’m in Finland for a week and things all began well last Monday (22 degrees Celcius and quite sunny). But unfortunately, today, yesterday, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow are not promising very good weather . But then again, if I look at my Google personal page, I can see that it’s not that much better than in the Netherlands. I think I’m going to stay in the Hotel tonight

Unfortunately I have already finished the two things I had planned for this week. My blog has been ported to the latest Worpress (2.2) and it’s gotten a revamp. I’ve already finished the book I brought with me. Well actually, I didn’t finish it, because the book is terrible (in Dutch)!

Ik bestel af en toe een paar t-shirts via Freshcotton of Threadless. Over het algemeen zijn het leuke shirts moet ik zeggen, maar dat ik natuurlijk niet raar omdat je je zelf uit kan zoeken .

Is er nog iemand die andere leuke sites heeft waar je dit soort shite kan bestellen. Ik hoorde laatst van iemand anders nog een andere coole site, maar die ben ik even vergeten. Najah, ik hoor het graag van je.

I’m in the process of upgrading my Wordpress installation. Things might look a bit out of the ordinary for a while. So far so good: Wordpress 2.2 has been installed. I did by the way clean things a little bit, so I’m also looking for a new theme…

Done upgrading Wordpress to 2.2.1. Upgrading was fairly easy. I did clean a bunch of stuff, so I’ll have to start over with several things I had on my “previous” blog. I’m going to look for a bunch of new plugins now.

Settled on Unwakeable as my new theme for now. It’s a clean-looking site and has a lot of options to integrate plugins into.

Installed a bunch of plugins. Most notably, the Gregarious plugin (Digg integration), PostViews and PostRating plugins and Landing Sites plugin. Ah, and I enable comment spam protection via Akismet again. In the 5 minutes I had it disabled, I got had 6 comment spammers dropping by

I just noticed I have to figure out a way to get my code snippets laid out nicely again. Right now it all looks really ugly (which is not that strange if you switch from one theme to another and remove all of your plugins…

That took a while, but the code formatting is done too! I finally managed to see which plugin I used for filtering < and > characters back into < and > characters after they were filtered out by Wordpress first (I wish Spring never started using XML, then I wouldn’t have had to go through all of this ). Also, I’ve modified the styles a bit, so all code in this blog entry is correctly showing up (see below). Maybe previous entries do not show up as nicely as they did when I first posted them–but hey, learn to live with it! And by the way, most of my technical posts go up on blog.interface21.com nowadays anyway.

I got the image back inline with the text again. This was pretty simple–just moved over the two styles I used for those images to the new theme.

Finally done updating the header image… Just a randomly selected picture for now. In Firefox I just noticed the colors don’t match entirely. I’ll leave that for–I need to get a nap.

Added another plugin displaying photos from my Picasa web albums. Seems to work pretty well, although I am beginning to think that all the plugins I’ve added just now are beginning to bog down the site a tad. Well, it’s not that’s there’s people visiting anyway, so why bother !

I’ve tried all kinds of Picasa widgets, but so far, none seems to work out of the box. Either the menu does not load anymore or the site gets terribly slow. Even worse, the more plugins I try, the less actually seem to do anything . If anybody has a good plugin for this theme (maybe it’s the theme–Unwakeable–that breaks the plugins or anything), don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Als ik op reis ben lees ik vaak een boek. Enerzijds omdat ik niet constant aan het werk wil zijn en anderzijds omdat ik tijdens de vele transits en andere wachttijden wat te doen wil hebben.

De laatste keuze was het van het weekend opgepikte boek Noedel Soep & Stokjes van Polly Evans (ISBN: 90-245-5414-4) of, in het Engels Fried Eggs with Chopsticks (in godsnaam, wie heeft die titel vertaald). Ik kocht dit boek samen met de Rough Guide to China omdat ik van plan ben deze zomer naar China te gaan voor m’n vakantie en ik me wel een beetje wilde verdiepen.

Nou, laat me je een ding zeggen: lees dit boek niet als je een leuke indruk van China wil krijgen. Ik zeg niet als je een goede of indruk van China wil krijgen, want ik weet (nog) niet op het klopt wat Polly allemaal schrijft. Maar echt waar: dit is een boek voor regelrechte zwartkijkers. Laat me je de eerste en de laatste zin uit het boek citeren:

Nou zijn dit niet de ergste zinnen uit het boek, want dan had ik wel wat verder kunnen zoeken. Maar als de eerste zin en de laatste zin uit een boek al zoveel negativiteit in zich herbergen, dan belooft het voor de rest sowieso niet veel goeds (en dat was het dan ook niet).

Normaalgesproken laat ik mijn gemoedstoestand niet zo bederven door een boek, maar ik ga na het afmaken van deze entry toch wel even heel snel op zoek naar wat feel-good stories over China op het net .

No Plan, No Capital, No Model… No Problem…

Interessante panel discussie onder leiding van Guy Kawasaki. De main trend van de discussie is het feit dat VCs het niet waard zijn. Okay, dat is de boel wel een beetje over een kam scheren, maar het komt er wel een beetje op neer. Belangrijkste wordt gezegd door Karen Northrup (Corefino) en James Hong (HotorNot). 1) VC-geld regelen betekent all-all-nothing en 2) VC moeten iets bieden wat je zonder hun niet kan krijgen.

Interessant voor elke ondernemer, hoewel veel een beetje eenzijdig is: panel discussie

Dubbing (oftewel nasynchronisatie) is de pest voor elk land dat z’n inwoners fatsoenlijk wil onderwijzen in vreemde talen! Voordat ik dit uitleg, lees eerst het volgende pakkende stukje van Jorge Louis Borges (die overigens ook een kort verhaal schreef over mijn eigen naam), geschreven in 1945, over dubbing:

The art of combination is not infinite in its possibilities, though those possibilities are apt to be frightening. The Greeks engendered the chimera, a monster with the head of a lion, the head of a dragon, and the head of a goat; the second-century theologians, the Trinity, in which the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost are inextricably linked; the Chinese zoologists, the ti-yiang, a bright red, supernatural bird equipped with six feet and six wings but with neither face nor eyes; nineteenth-century geometrists, the hypercube, a four-dimensional figure enclosing an infinite number of cubes and bounded by eight cubes and twenty-four squares. In elk land waar ik kom (en dat zijn er de afgelopen zes maanden geloof ik 14 geweest) komt het onderwerp talen wel ter sprake. Of ik draag het op de een of andere vage manier aan, of het komt op een andere manier ter tafel. Ik heb er een gewoonte van gemaakt om te vragen of er in dat land nagesynchroniseerd wordt. Het antwoord is voor de volle 100% voorspelbaar ben ik achter gekomen. In de landen waar men fatsoenlijk Engels spreekt wordt niet nagesynchroniseerd, in de landen waar de uitspraak van de Engelse taal belabberd is, of waar men zelfs moeizaam Engels spreek wordt altijd nagesynchroniseerd. Inmiddels durf ik de (op zich toch al niet zo bijster vage) conclusie nu wel te trekken: nasynchronisatie zou verboden moeten worden (mits je als land tenminste wil dat mensen fatsoenlijk de wereldtaal kunnen leren en bovenal uitspreken).

Gelukkig begeef ik me nog in kringen waar de Engelse taal betrekkelijk hoog in het vaandel staat (of anderszins: zonder Engels kom je niet zo heel ver), dus ik heb er weinig last van. Maar och, och, och, wat zouden die Fransen een ander volkje zijn als ze toch eens dat Franse accent zouden afleren bij het praten van Engels (als ze dat uberhaupt al doen ).

Ondertussen zit ik nu in Finland en hoeraaaaaaa, ze hebben ze nasynchronisatie hier nog niet uitgevonden!

O ja, en als je nou gaat miepen dat voor mensen die totaal geen Engels begrijpen dubbing veel beter is dan subtitles, lees het volgende (wederom van Jorge Louis Borges):

Those who defend dubbing might argue (perhaps) that objections to it can also be raised against any kind of translation. This argument ignores, or avoids, the principal defect: the arbitrary implant of another voice and another language. The voice of Hepburn or Garbo is not accidental but, for the world, one of their defining features.

Vanmiddag een rondje gelopen over de Grebbeberg. Ik was er nog nooit geweest… Het was een beetje regenachtig en de camera was nog wat onwennig, dus het zullen niet de mooiste plaatjes zijn .
